Free Native Bee Rescue and Removal Service From Water Meters

Servicing the Brisbane Moreton Bay Region

Our native bee removal service is a free service operating in the Moreton Bay region of Northern Brisbane. Our business Tetra Native Bees is a family owned and operated business with over 15 years of beekeeping experience.

Contact us by filling out our Native Bee Removal Request form below.

We relocate native stingless bees from various unwanted locations such as water meter boxes (where native stingless bee colonies often construct their hive) and place them into a safe environment. As this service benefits both native bees and our business we provide it for free within the Brisbane Moreton Bay region provided the hive is easily accessible.

Native stingless bees traditionally construct their hives in empty tree hollows, however due to deforestation and land clearing the number of suitable locations available to native bees has drastically decreased. The result is native stingless bees constructing their hives in unwanted and unsuitable locations.

Unwanted areas native bees often choose to build their nest include

  • Water meter boxes
  • Telstra service pits
  • Fire hydrants
  • Upturned planter pots
  • Various low-level hollows

Native stingless bees located in areas such as those mentioned above often succumb to flooding in wet weather conditions or are exterminated by pest control providers. Allowing us to safely remove the colony ensures the survival of our native bees and restores access to service pits at zero cost.

Our native bee removal program is a mutually beneficial service benefiting both our native bees, service providers, property managers and property owners. These hives are then used for various purposes such as pollination services which we provided to local farms.

Native Bees In Water Meter Boxes

Why do native bees move into water meter boxes?

Australian native stingless bees exist in social colonies in the wild and typically construct their nest in empty tree hollows. With their natural habitat rapidly decreasing due to deforestation they are often forced to locate suitable locations to nest within suburbia. Water meter boxes are often targeted by stingless bees for the following reasons.

  • Water meter boxes have similar dimensions to the empty tree hollows usually targeted by native bees
  • Water meter boxes have suitable sized entrances for native stingless bees to enter and defend
  • Water meter boxes are well insulated from hot and cold weather conditions and internal conditions are often humid, conducive for native stingless bee habitation
  • Water meter boxes are readily available to native bees, especially in suburban areas bordering bushland

Unfortunately, although water meter boxes meet many of the requirements sought by native bees looking to construct a new hive, they also have some serious downsides. Native bees located inside water meter boxes often succumb to flooding during heavy downfalls. Although native bees are harmless to humans, ability to read water meters containing native bee colonies is often not possible causing the nest to be exterminated by property owners or pest control providers.

For native bee removal from water meter boxes please fill out our removal request form above.
