It is believed the medicinal properties of native stingless bee honey are largely due to how these tiny native bees store it within their hive.
Unlike European honey bees, native stingless bees store their honey in pots made out of propolis.
Stingless bees make propolis by collecting resins from trees and mix this with wax secreted from special glands on their abdomen.
The resins collected by stingless bees are produced by special resin cells in plants. Plants often produce these resins as a protective mechanism after an injury has occurred.
Researchers have detected over 300 compounds in propolis. It is proven to have a high bioactivity level with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antitumour effects.
These effects are primarily due to the high flavonoid, terpenoid and phenolic acid content of propolis which are then naturally infused into the honey.
In a study assessing the antimicrobial strength of 22 honey samples from Australian native stingless bees (tetragonula carbonaria) the average TA (total activity) measured 26.3%. In the same study TA of the Manuka honey control measured 18%. (study link)

Australian native stingless bee honey has a significantly lower sugar content than other honey types including Manuka. On top of this, a large percentage of this sugar is low GI.
Scientists have recently discovered honey from stingless bees contains trehalulose, a rare sugar with a low GI that is found in no other honey. This means it is absorbed more slowly into the bloodstream, avoiding sudden spikes in blood sugar.
Studies have also shown trehalulose has a low cariogenicity, meaning it does not cause tooth decay and may even help to prevent it. Trehalulose is roughly half as sweet as table sugar and also acts as a powerful antioxidant helping to prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. (study link)
Stingless bee honey has long been known as 'Mother Medicine' in many areas of the world and is one of the most potent medicinal honeys available. It has been featured in National Geographic and ABC News. Click on the drop down boxes below to learn more about how stingless bee honey can help you.
New research has shown Australian native stingless bee honey to be high in trehalulose, a rare sugar with a low GI that is found in no other honey.
This means it is absorbed more slowly into the bloodstream, avoiding sudden spikes in blood sugar. This is extremely beneficial for individuals struggling with diabetes and weight management issues.
Studies have also shown trehalulose has a low cariogenicity, meaning it does not cause tooth decay and may even help to prevent it.
Trehalulose is roughly half as sweet as table sugar and also acts as a powerful antioxidant helping to prevent against cell damage from free radicals. (study link) (study link)
Native stingless bee honey can be applied to minor burns to reduce the chance of infection and promote healing.
Its high antioxidant and moisture content compared to regular honey make it a powerful natural wound healer.
Studies have shown stingless bee honey can benefit skin and promote wound healing in the following ways
Native stingless bee honey is also particularly effective at inhibiting staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria responsible for golden staph, making it a great novel treatment for such infections. (study link) (study link) (study link)
Stingless bee honey contains high levels of lactobacillus, a good bacterium that acts as a natural probiotic improving digestion, absorption and overall gut health.
Due to its high organic acid and hydrogen peroxide levels numerous studies have also shown native stingless bee honey to act as a broad range antimicrobial, inhibiting many strains of harmful bacteria and fungi.
It has a potential use as a natural treatment for inflammatory conditions caused by microbial growth, particularly those involving antibiotic resistant strains. (study link) (study link) (study link)
Studies have shown that the application of stingless bee honey reduced the inflammatory signs, duration of infection, and total healing time of bacterial conjunctivitis.
The results were equivalent to antibiotic treatment groups indicating stingless bee honey may be the preferred method of treatment when issues with antibiotic resistance occur.
Topical application of stingless bee honey on exterior parts of the eye have also been reported to have a therapeutic benefit in treating dry eye syndrome, corneal injuries, keratitis and blepharitis.
Studies also showed the medicinal properties of propolis (prevalent in stingless bee honey) are beneficial to deeper internal areas of the eye such as the retina, optic nerve, and uvea. (study link) (study link) (study link) (study link)
Some research indicates that stingless bee honey consumption might have a positive impact on blood pressure, which is a significant factor in overall cardiovascular health.
Studies have shown propolis from Australian stingless bees relaxed arteries and may have therapeutic potential for management of cardiovascular disorders. (study link) (study link)
Australian stingless bee honey contains much higher antimicrobial properties than regular honey, making it a popular natural remedy for soothing sore throats and suppressing coughs. It is considered to be one of the strongest medicinal honeys available. (study link) (study link)
While acute inflammation is essential for healing, chronic inflammation can be harmful, leading to various diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes.
Studies have shown that stingless bee honey possesses anti-inflammatory properties. It contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Research indicates that stingless bee honey can reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, thereby alleviating symptoms and promoting healing in inflammatory conditions. (study link) (study link) (study link)
Many studies have reported on the anticancer properties of stingless bee honey. These studies showed the anticancer properties are contributed to a number of mechanisms.
It is well known that inflammation plays a crucial role in cancer progression. It is thought the anti-inflammatory qualities of stingless bee honey may aid in cancer prevention and progression.
The high antioxidant value of stingless bee honey also makes it particularly effective at scavenging cell damaging free radicals, which may be another contributing factor in preventing cancer formation.
Polyphenols found in stingless bee honey such as quercetin, apigenin, chrysin, and luteolin also have anticancer properties. These polyphenols primarily work by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. (study link) (study link) (study link)
Studies have also shown stingless bee honey to have a neuroprotective effect which is likely contributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities.
Studies have also shown the amino acid phenylalanine found in stingless bee honey may also improve learning and memory function by improving synaptic plasticity and synaptogenesis. (study link)
Due to its low viscosity compared to regular honey native stingless bee honey is easily applied to the skin, with a small amount going a long way.
Its high antioxidant and moisture content compared to regular honey make it an amazing natural facial cleanser.
Studies have shown stingless bee honey can benefit skin and promote wound healing in the following ways
To use as a facial cleanser simply apply a small amount of stingless bee honey evenly over your skin and allow 20 minutes for the honey to work its wonders. Rinse with warm water and repeat on a regular basis. Patch testing is recommended prior to use. If reaction occurs cease use.
This extremely rare and complex tasting honey is loaded with health benefits that are backed by science. Often describes as 'tasting like Australia’ native stingless bee honey was traditionally referred to as 'Sugarbag' by Indigenous Australians.
It has a unique fermented taste with citrus and fruity undertones. The high level of phenolic acids in native bee honey (which act as powerful antioxidants) give it a sharp tangy bite.
A strong hive of native stingless bees produce only 1kg of honey per year in warmer climates, making it one of the rarest treats on the planet.
It is less viscous (runnier) than regular honey and is often used for medicinal purposes or as a delicacy in high end restaurants. It's higher water percentage coupled with its considerable microorganism content make it a great naturally fermented product.
Its unique flavour goes great over ice-cream, yoghurt or muesli. Otherwise, simply take it straight off the spoon morning and night for a healthy treat. If you've tasted anything like it before...we'll give your money back!
At Tetra Native Bees we take pride in providing our customers with a quality product they can rely on.

At Tetra, we aim for consistency within our brand. Harvesting native stingless bee honey in a repeatable, sustainable and hygienic fashion is a critical step in achieving this. By purchasing honey directly from our honey farm in Queensland Australia, we are able to guarantee quality and purity, while keeping cost down.
It is only possible to harvest honey from stingless bees in warmer regions of Australia like QLD, where social stingless bees produce excess to their needs. In these regions, a honey super can be added to a strong hive and then harvested every 12 months.
Only a small amount of excess honey is produced by native stingless bees, with the average harvest amount per hive being less than 1kg. In comparison, one hive of the common European honey bee may produce up to 60kg of honey per year!
The extraction process is very time consuming and as mentioned, only returns a very small amount of honey. Unlike European honey bees which store their honey in wax comb, native stingless bees store their honey in small pots made out of propolis.
To extract the honey these pots are first pierced, and the honey left to drain before being filtered. The filtered honey is then placed in a fermenter and left to mature for a period of 3-6 months. This maturation process stabilizes the honey, giving it added health benefits while making it safe for postage and long term storage.
The end result is a delicious, pure and natural all Australian product with amazing medicinal qualities. It is free from preservatives, additives or any exposure to heat.
All orders are sustainably packaged using upcycled materials where possible and shipped to our customers doors via Australia Post.
